“Being in the Whitmer home where the prophet translated the sacred record of the Nephites truly was the key, “ said Carol from CO, “‘…and a little child shall lead them.’”
Many events of the Restoration took place at the Whitmer farm. Joseph and Oliver finished translating The Book of Mormon; Joseph Smith heard “the voice of God in the chamber of old Father Whitmer.” (D&C 128:21) In this cabin the three witnesses wrote their testimony. The Church was organized here on April 6, 1830.
The log home was torn down in 1873 and rebuilt more than 100 years later. The farmer who sold the Church the logs to rebuild the cabin was eventually baptized and the first to be endowed in the Palmyra Temple. John told us the rest of the story about how the logs from this man’s barn were miraculously available when the Church was ready to rebuild.
