24 Jul - Hannibal, MO

This is the home of Samuel L. Clemens, better known to the world as Mark Twain. He took his pen name from the term “mark twain” which means “safe water” for a riverboat, or a depth of 12 feet (2 6 foot knots or marks on the measuring rope). Clemens was a riverboat pilot for 4 years. A small boat traveled in front of the riverboats and periodically measured the depth of the water with a knotted rope—one knot every 6 feet. When the person in the front boat yelled, “Mark twain,” the riverboat pilot knew the river was deep enough for safe passage.
