22-23 Jul - Riser Boot and Shoe

It was interesting to see how a shoe was made, beginning with an insole. Then leather uppers were made and added, after which the bottom sole was put on. The heel was added last and was made of several pieces of cut leather. There was no right or left shoe; people just rotated them to wear evenly. Shoes were expensive, costing $1.75 per pair. Boots were even more expensive. They were $5 a pair. That's a lot considering a person earned about $1 a day. George Riser came from Germany and heard about the Church in Ohio. They came to Nauvoo, where their son became ill. Joseph Smith healed the baby, which led to the family’s baptism. The son later died, but the family traveled to Utah and had 9 children.
