22-23 Jul - Scovil Bakery
Lucius Scovil and his wife, Lucy, built and ran this bakery, which was essential for residents and activities in Nauvoo. They joined the Church in Kirtland and were baptized by the Prophet Joseph. In Nauvoo, Lucius buried his wife, after she gave birth to twins who also died. He lost another child as well, but still completed a mission to England. While there, he commissioned the blue and white Nauvoo plate with a picture of the temple and the names of the 12 Apostles. After hearing the story, we sampled gingerbread cookies. We learned in our devotional Thursday morning on the bus about the millstones at the bakery. Finely ground flour was needed because children under 10 could not digest the course ground meal or “run of the mill.” Also a miller could tell whether or not the millstones were adjusted properly the smell as the stones were grinding. Thus we have the phrase “nose to the grindstone.”
