Brought into the Church by Parley P. Pratt on his mission to Canada, John Taylor and his wife were stalwart members of the Church. They arrived in Kirtland and moved to Missouri with the Saints, where they suffered persecution. They moved to Nauvoo and while John Taylor was on a mission in Great Britain, his wife and children lived in an old barracks. Upon his return, John Taylor built a log cabin where they lived until the brick home was completed. John was the editor of the Nauvoo Neighbor and the Times and Seasons. He was with Joseph and Hyrum in Carthage and received severe injuries. He traveled west with the Saints and was the 3rd president of the Church. The missionaries told the story of the rocking horse. It was John’s son’s favorite toy and after the family began their trek west, John came back to get it to console his son.
