We followed the counsel of President Hinckley and walked down Parley Street. Along the path were remembrances from the pioneers as they left their beloved Nauvoo and the temple on the bluff. Wilford Woodruff wrote, “I could see the Saints pouring out and gathering like clouds from the hills and dales, grove and prairie with their teams, wagons, flocks and herds by hundreds and thousands as it were until it looked like the movement of a great Nation.” Bathsheba Smith wrote, “My last act in that precious spot was to tidy the rooms, sweep up the floor, and set the broom in its accustomed place behind the door. Then with emotions in my heart…I gently closed the door and faced the unknown future; faced it with faith in God and with no less assurance of the ultimate establishment of the Gospel in the West and of its true, enduring principles, than I had felt in those trying scenes in Missouri.” It was difficult not to feel the emotions of these pioneers as we walked the path and read their words.

22-23 Jul - Trail of Hope
